Jaseypoo 2004 Awards for....STUFF
With the new year approaching, I thought I'd have a little impromptu awards ceremony of my own. I know this is edge of your seats excitement, so without further ado, the winners are.....
(Note this is for me personally and does not reflect the opinions of anyone else except for my groupies)
Music:
Good music was relatively bountiful this year, with two of my favourite bands releasing their latest albums this year, and unsurprisingly score a mention for Album of the year. Both albums scored highly and won many awards however, so its not just favouritism ;)
Best Song of 2004:
'Float On' by Modest Mouse - catchy, upbeat, with clever lyrics, this was the breakout alternative song for the indie band 'Modest Mouse' from the album 'Good News For People Who Love Bad News'. A minor hit here in Australia with air time on Triple J
Best Album of 2004:
'Good News For People Who Love Bad News' by Modest Mouse - This album catapulted the band Modest Mouse into American mainstream radio with their flagship single "Float On', and went as far up as 25 on the top 40 Albums chart. While different from their previous efforts, it contained enough of the obtuse lyrics and musical variance in their songs to satisfy their older alt music fans. While some naturally didn't like it, I thought that it was a good progression in their sound (while keeping all the trademarks of their music that made me love them in the first place), and thus earned a place in my cd players for a long long while. While Modest Mouse is one of, if not, my favourite band, even i was amazed and impressed by their latest offering. I heartily recommend it for at least a listen. Won many awards, and is a good portent of future offerings.
Honourable Mention: 'A Ghost Is Born' by Wilco. A much anticipated album, Wilco takes its alt country roots and plaunges them even more into the depths of alternativeness with the use of experimental sound. Though not as good as their previous album (the Rolling Stone's 2002 Album of the Year, and still one of my fave albums of all time), it's unique sound combined with its roots in alt country still made me enjoy this album very much.
Best New Band: Deathcab For Cutie. While having been around since 1997, it was only this year I discovered them, and I quite enjoy their music. Although I enjoy a lot of different types of music, Deathcab for Cutie is a mellow indie pop band with lyrics rich in symbolism, very much like "The Shins", one of my fave bands, it naturally appeals very much to one of my musical tastes. Try to find their song "Styrofoam Plates", one their best songs and a good indication of their sound. Even scored a mention in the OC ;) (Though I started listening to them before then if you're wondering :P )
Honourable Mention: Pas//Cal. Having heard both recently released EP's, their catchy tunes and whimsical lyrics make them evry enjoyable to listen to. I think I've talked about them before, so I won't go much further. I can't wait to hear more of their stuff.
Most Annoying Song: Nothing really springs to mine, except maybe Perfect by Simple Plan, cos it seemed like everywhere I went I heard that song.
TV/Movies:
Best Movie: Its a tie! Can't decide between 'Garden State' or 'Kill Bill Vol 2'. I've said a lot about Garden Stae so I won't repeat it, but Kill Bill vol 2 was a great ending to the tale begun in Kill Bill vol 1. Enjoyable, with the sort of unrealistic, but oh so intelligent dialogue between the characters, it's homage to the samurai/western epics of yore as well as the engaging dialogue makes this an enjoyable movie, despite eschewing the edgy settings of Tarrantino's previous movies. While not quite as popular or liked by others as Tarrantino's previous movies (especially amony tarrantino fans themselves), I thought highly engaging, and thus ties with Garden Syae as movie of the year.
TV Series: 'The O.C' - I'm ashamed, but yes I thoroughly enjoyed the O.C, despite despising previous teen drams like Dawson's Creek etc. The plentiful excuses for bikini beach parties are always good in my book. But really, do I need to explain this? :P
Best Cartoon -'Family Guy', without a doubt. Funny and witty with its many references to a variety of topics from old movies, obscure novels and historical events, while combining the right amount of stupidity without degenerating to the retarded antics of the new Simpsons.
Best Anime: 'Naruto'. A cartoon about ninjas. With awesome ninja power(s). Ninjas. Need I say more?
Books:
Best Novel: Field of Swords by Conn Iggulden. The third novel in his saga based on the historical figure Julius Caesar, his tale of the loyalty of men in adverstiy, and their belief in a higher cause than the power hungry men that are Caesar's political contemporaries, it is a highly enjoyable read, and strikes all the right chords in me. More of a guy book though, but its good.
Best Series: March Upcountry/To the Sea/To the Stars by John Ringo. Typoical military scifi fare, trashy scifi pulp fiction, but oh so entertaining
Best Manga (Japanese comic): Ichigo 100%!! One boy, 3 hot women. Insert hijinks that always lead to scompromising situations. Damn funny. I love it! :)
Honourable mention: Naruto. The anime is based on this manga. Fucking ninjas people, c'mon!
Misc:
Best Webcomic: Perry Bible Fellowship Naughty, random, clever and most importantly, funny. See link at sidebar
Best Female Celebrity: Elisha Cuthbert!!!
Honourable mention: Hilton sisters Paris and Nikki :P and Rachel Bilson. and of course Nat Portman. Duh.
Best Male Celebrity (that isn't me): Hrmm..I dunno..Adam Brody? One of you girls just throw me a naem and it'll be him...but if not probably Adam Brody. Very endearing as Seth Cohen.
Honourable mention: insert here pls
Best Game: Since I only started playin wow a few days ago, I can't vote that, despite playing it virtually non stop since boxing day. Knights of the Old Republic probably.
Honourable Mention: Call of Duty
Most Overrated Entertainer on Australian TV: Rove. That bastard.
Funniest media bite: Fidel Castro falls on his face. Take that you communists! :p
Person Most Deserving of a Kick in the Balls: Still Ken. Heh heh heh
Best Thing I Bought: Xbox?
Best Website: war3live
uhh can't be bothered thinking of anymore, so I'll end it there. I'll probably do a little wind up of the year at a later date, hopefully before New Year's. Enjoy these holidays y'hear?
