Dan is back! And Kaz has a funky new hair do. The hallmark of a great holiday ;)
I once spent most of the night at Carnegies (drunk) with a bunch of similarly inebriated bandgeeks, discussing the merits of various indie bands that were big among those of that interest. The guys had distanced themselves, probably because they're anti social, though the overall sweatiness of my conversation partners may have played a part.
Amid discussing the various merits of The Shins, Cursive, the Eels, Muse and other bands you'd never have heard of unless you read this site, I once pitched the idea that these bands were indie because a lot of their songs were too fucking artsy, and thus unreachable by the mainstream.
"Take Cursive for instance," I said to a portly girl wearing a (no doubt) over priced Cursive t-shirt. "Most Cursive songs are pretentious and overly artsy, and they recognise it themselves" I told her, "For example, Art is Hard" (a great song by the way, download if you can). "In fact, there shouldn't even be genres in music. Music is something that should be free form, like a story. It should mean something to everyone" I excitedly slurred. "I think that any song from any genre could, with changes, be accessible by fans of another genre".
They of course, demurred, and we brainstormed a whole bunch of songs from the aforementioned bands that could be good in another genre, complete with some drunken singing on my part. We agreed to disagree in the end, though I felt it was more because of their obstinance than anything. Anyway, the point is, I just heard a really great cover of one song by another, in a completely different genre. I love this stuff. I've had it on my comp for awhile, but I'd forgotten all about it till just then, where in a flash of inspiration, I decided to relate this completely boring story as an introduction to one of the best covers of "Straight Outta Compton" you'll ever hear, by the angel Nina Gordon. Get to it! Song is on the player thatta way ---->
P.S For those interested, there's a really great cover of Gin & Tonic (originally by Snoop Dog) by the Gourds.
P.P.S - Forgot to mention last week, I added more Spinto Band, "Brown Boxes" - enjoy!
